Chortens at Hemis National Park
These Chortens (Buddhist monuments that mark a grave of a Lama (monk) or religious locations) are dotted all over Ladakh. This one is located near Hemis Monastery, one of Ladakh's most revered treasures and perhaps its richest. The altitude here is lower, perhaps 11,000 ft, but the landscape is rugged. The old fold rocks were once under the Tethys sea bed, and rose from the collison of the Indian subcontinent with the Gondwana supercontinent.
