Storms on the Changthang
The briny salt water lake of Tso Kar, Ladakh.
The altitude here is about 14,500 ft. We had to walk about 4 kilometers to get to this point by the lake. We were interested in catching some good shots of bar headed geese etc, stunning birds that have made this high altitudes on the Tibetan plateau their home for the summer. Lugging all the heavy camera equipment was tough and there were no birds on the day. However, the landscape, with all the salt around and the snow-capped peaks, was dramatic! Recent studies have also shown that Ladakh has one of the lowest oxygen levels at this altitude, even more than Tibet. We felt it first hand! The walk was torture!
