Sunrise on Mt. Gya, Ladakh
Its not as if Mt. Gya is a high mountain in Himalayan terms (Its just shy of 7000 meters), but the fact that the white peaks tower over the surrounding brown, green and blue landscape makes this peak all the more striking! In fact, Ladakh is a very high plateau but the surrounding peaks are mostly sub-7000 meter peaks. Just a bit further to the North-North-West, about 30 minutes flying time, lies the treacherous Karakoram (not, technically, a part of the Himalayas) that is home to K2, Gasherbrum, Masherbrum and Broad....all the top-14 highest 8000 meter peaks in the world.
The lake is Tso Moriri and this pic was taken at about 15,500 feet altitude.
