Thiksey Monastery
Ladakh. A few miles from Leh, Thiksey is located at 11,800 feet altitude, just off the main Leh-Manali highway. It was built to resemble the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Ladakhis are an extension of the Tibetans and their looks, religion and lifestyle are very similar, as is the rugged landscape in the high Himalayas. Oxygen at this altitude is low and walking around for us people from the plains, is always difficult.
