Howrah Bridge

Long exposure shot.

The year 1937 was the cantilever era and engineers felt that cantilever bridge would be more durable and rigid than normal suspension bridges. The offer of making such a grand work was given to many firms and the work contract was finally won by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Co. Ltd of Darlington. Tata Iron and Steel Company supplied the steel, and the fabrication work was done by Burn, Braithwaite and Jessop Company. The quantity of steel supplied by Tata Iron was 23,500 tons. The urgency was such that Indians were trained for the job and divided in three shifts of 8 hours each to enable the construction work to carry on for 24 hours.

In February 1943 the concrete work and steel work was completed and The Howrah Bridge was opened to traffic.
