A View of Leh Airport from Spituk Gompah

Typical Tibetan architecture in view here with the Buddhist prayer wheel that needs to be rotated clockwise for good fortune. The mountain range ahead with an average height of 18,000 ft need to be crossed via Khardung La (pass) to reach Nubra Valley on the other side, a roughly 6 hour drive. Leh valley is at an average altitude of 12,000 ft.
Aircraft, including commercial flights land from left to right of the image. Its too tight landing in the opposite direction. During take off, flights taxi from right to left as that direction give them a bit more space to take a hard bank to the right and avoid the mountains ahead. One of the toughest mountain landings in the world!
