Fort Sumter

Taken in Charleston, South Carolina. Fort Sumter is a sea fort located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. The fort is best known as the site where the shots were fired that started the American Civil War on April 12, 1861. It is a Third System masonry sea fort was built after the War of 1812. Construction began in 1829 and was still ongoing in 1861. The fort was rebuilt after the Civil War. From 1876 to 1897, Fort Sumter was used only as an unmanned lighthouse station.

the Spanish-American War caused construction on the fort to be restarted. Fort Sumter was opened to the public on April 28, 1948. Today it is open to the public via tour boat.
