Monday, October 29, 2018 -- c1SE Foundry Matrix Bridge 3D

While Pygment Press now has useful holders to cast foundry matrices on the Super Caster, there is always Plate 41 in the Parts Book to drool over.

Here are views of the c1SE Foundry Bridge from Plate 41, printed in 3D plastic and bolted to a spare Display Head. Note that in the lower left picture the approximate location of a foundry matrix is outlined in red. It can be seen there is a lot of clearance room to the left of where the d13SEE Type Lifter is situated, this is the reason for the whole attachment.

As Theo Rehak says in his 1993 book Practical Typecasting: "Through the era of the pivotal caster and into that of the automatic caster, matrices went through a continual reduction of length. Original matrices have sometimes been gammoned to fit newer machines". With the Monotype foundry matrix holder, or any of my designs, there is no need to modify original mats, due to the clearance shown above.

The Monotype foundry holders secure a matrix in the same fashion as the previously shown Indian holder, that being a clamp/screw arrangement.

Note that while the Monotype Foundry holder fits up to existing equipment, to my knowledge, they never did address the issue of casting foundry matrices for type bodies over 36 pt. The design of the large Super caster mould set (42 pt. to 72 pt.) has the seal-off area for the matrix positioned below the top of the mould, thereby limiting the casting of large type to only English Monotype square matrices. That being said, and knowing the skillful capabilities of the Monotype mould department, if someone asked, they could have built it. Unfortunately, this is all gone.

This is why I proposed to modify this top plate on spare insets so that there is clearance with larger foundry matrices, see this description:
