Haida totem pole
40-foot pole from Masset Village, Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia, acquired for the museum in 1901. It was sold because there was no-one in the community who could rightfully inherit it, so can be admired with a clear post-colonial conscience (unlike the museum's shrunken heads, which are no longer on display).
Pitt-Rivers Museum, Oxford.
