Plaque on the wall of the Corn Exchange

Recording the construction of the building by Admiral Sir Cloudsley Shovell in 1706.

Shovell was MP for Rochester, but is best remembered today for his death in the naval disaster of November 1707 when his fleet struck rocks off the Isles of Scilly with the loss of 4 ships and nearly 2,000 men. The disaster prompted the search for a reliable method of calculating longitude, as chronicled in Dava Sobel's 1995 bestseller of that title.

High Street, Rochester, Kent.
