Dickens' Swiss chalet

A gift to the writer from the French actor Charles Fechter, this wooden building arrived flat-packed in 94 pieces and was erected in the grounds of Dickens' country house of Gad's Hill. Dickens found it an ideal place to work in peace on his later novels.

Now in the garden of Eastgate House, Rochester, Kent, and awaiting restoration.
