St Nicholas' church, East Dereham, Norfolk
16th-century bell tower, built separately from the church because the existing tower was not strong enough to hold the bells.
During the Napoleonic wars, the tower was used as a staging-post to hold prisoners of war en route to prison camp in Cambridgeshire. A young lieutenant called Jean de Narde was shot dead trying to escape; his gravestone can still be seen in the churchyard.
