Bronze Age logboat

Discovered during quarrying operations at the Hanson gravel pit at Shardlow, south of Derby, in 1988.

The boat is carved from a single oak tree-trunk and was found still with the cargo of sandstone that it was carrying, probably to strengthen a causeway across the river Trent.
