Tomb effigy of Elizabeth Cavendish, later Elizabeth Talbot, Countess of Shrewsbury (c. 1527 - 1608), the powerful Tudor noblewoman who married four times, amassed a vast fortune, built the houses of Chatsworth and Hardwick, and founded the Cavendish dynasty (dukes of Devonshire). She was also for a while the keeper of Mary Queen of Scots during the latter's long imprisonment in England.
