Vallo Di Diano pr Salerno visto da San Rufo
Il Vallo di Diano, con forma ovale, è una pianura molto fertile, che si estende per circa 40 Km da Polla a Casalbuono, con una larghezza media di Km 7 e la superficie di circa 17.000 ettari di seminativi, vigneti, pascoli. La valle è cinta, come in un anfiteatro di verde, da una pittoresca catena di monti, facenti parte del massiccio appenninico ad oriente e degli Alburni ad occidente dove vi vegetano il castagno, il faggio, l’abete e si presenta come un’oasi a chi viene dalla Lucania e dal Cilento.
Al tempo dei romani, la nostra valle si chiamava “campo atinate”, da Atìnum, oggi Atena, città a quel tempo più importante. Successivamente e fino al Medio Evo, fu detta “Vallis rations”, valle della ragione, poiché qui, all’epoca romana, fu dato solennemente ragione agli agricoltori in dissidio con i pastori per l’uso delle terre dell’agro pubblico che, venuto in possesso di voraci latifondisti, era stato adibito quasi completamente al pascolo.
