chair and table

Just started woodworking and was visiting a lumber dealer to try hardwood for the first time. Three big planks of cherry stood out. Two became the top of the trestle table in this set. The third plank was badly split. That single plank became these two pieces. Metalwork by local blacksmith, Bear Mountain Forge.

I'd read an article about Nakashima, whence the two wenge butterfly joints (little dark bow ties). The butterfly in the table is appropriate; the one in the chair, not so much. Beginner's mistake.

I found the table joinery very challenging. First routed the tongue&groove joints with extra long tongues, then cut away most of the extra length of the tongues to leave three through-tenons for the three square holes at each end of the top.

The only challenge in the chair was handcut dovetails at about 96 degrees - and the stupid, pretentious butterfly.

All the furniture in the picture was made here - money saved goes to film and developer!
