Rain Impending
The ‘Earth Tubes’ outside the Co-operative head office at 1 Angel Square, Manchester.
The 'Tubes' are used to suck 50m³/second of fresh air into the Co-op’s huge basement plant room where the temperature of the air is controlled giving cool air in summer and warm air in winter. Giant fans then circulated the air around the building through the service ducting to all floors.
The building in the background is ‘New Century House’ which is a Grade II listed building on the corner of Corporation Street and Miller Street. After Co-operative Group employees migrated to 1 Angel Square in 2013, office and kitchen space has been available to small-medium-sized businesses to rent.
