Tangier Island Sunrise

A cold front blew through over night and this sunrise shot has a rather cold, austere feel to it. Temperature went from 80 F. to about 60 F. in a matter of hours!

Tangier Island, located in the Chesapeake Bay, about 12 miles from the Eastern Shore community of Onancock, Virginia, was settled in the late 1600s. Today, there are about 500 residents, most of them local watermen who spend long days on the Chesapeake Bay fishing for blue crabs. Others on the island manage a few small restaurants, provide taxi service to visitors in their golf carts (the only car on the island belongs to the police officer), teach at the one school on the island grades K-12, and attend to the health care needs of the local residents at a modest but modern medical clinic. The island is definitely a throwback to an earlier age with its modest and simple way of life.
