Haiti/Artisans

On June 13-15, 2017, the Clinton Foundation and J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) brought leaders from the retail, fashion, and fragrance sectors to visit partners in Haiti with the goal of developing new sourcing opportunities and forming new business partnerships with Haitian artisans and business owners.

Here, members of the delegation visit Papillon, a socially- and ecologically-conscious business that employs nearly 300 artisans who work with a wide range of materials – most of which are sourced locally – on pottery, paper making, jewelry making, sewing, screen printing, and metal art.

The Clinton Foundation Haiti initiative provided support to Papillon Enterprise to enable them to expand and diversify their business. The support included capacity building and provided for the purchase of new equipment and materials, which allowed the business to meet the growing demand for their products and to provide stable, well-paid jobs for nearly 300 artisans in the Delmas community. Their products are now featured by retailers like Breuniger, Chan Luu, and Urban Zen by Donna Karen. Papillon is one of ten women-owned businesses currently participating the Clinton Foundation’s Women Economic Participation Consortium (WEPC), which works to advance the economic participation of women in Haiti’s economy and promote women as important business leaders, empowered employees, and dynamic entrepreneurs through a range of business support services aimed at both the entrepreneurs and their employees.
