San Sebastian Gate in the Aurelian Wall in Rome

This gate preserves the original 3rd century CE facing. The builders intentionally left blemishes in the wall face to avoid offending the gods, who might have seen constructing a perfect wall as an act of hubris, and thereby aided Rome's enemies to destroy it.
