Keighley Bee
Shrimp fisherman with powerful Brabant horse
I gather Countryfile recently visited these fishermen, which tempted me to sort out a few images.
The fishermen of Oostduinkerke, Belgium, are the last to maintain the tradition of shrimp fishing with horses. They can only reach the shrimps around low tide, and the main season is limited to May/June and September/October. The heavy horses used today are Belgian Brabants, though in the past any horse might have been pressed into service. The net is dragged through 3 to 4 feet of water; the panniers are for holding the catch.
