#21. The Road to Charing Cross ( Part 2 ) - Flashman and the Tiger

Flashman aged: 61 - 62

Years: 1883 - 1884

*Notes

it’s 1883 and Flashman in an attempt to avoid being sent on a mission to Sudan takes a trip through Europe on the maiden voyage of the Orient Express. However as usual trouble is just round the next corner. Having got caught up in a plot to assassinate the Emperor Franz Josef (which he unwittingly foils) Flashman finds himself run-through in a duel deep within a salt-mine by the son of an old enemy Rupert Willem von Starnbery. And who should come to his aid just as he’s about to croak? Caprice his french secret service ‘acquaintance’ from Berlin, who happens to be an ace at swordplay herself.

It was the later assassination of Franz Josef brother Franz Ferdinand in 1914 that led to the first great world war. If it wasn’t for Flashy perhaps things may have turned out very different.
