I picked through the rubble of my family's apartment. No sign of them or where they could have gone. The crumbling buildings on the horizon seemed to reflect the defeat I felt. The only consolation, I thought, was that they probably hadn't died in the Cataclysm. After all, I hadn't found their bodies. There was nothing useful left; the scavengers had picked the entire building clean. I looked for a message, but they wouldn't have left one for me. They thought I would be gone for the rest of my life.
Poking around in a pile of trash, I found a broken frame with my family's picture in it. We were all smiling. I folded it and tucked it in my pocket. Sighing, I glanced once more across the room and left. If they were still alive out there, I'd find them.
