Buff-banded rail on Lord Howe Island.
Seen here foraging in the Settlement area near Pinetrees Lodge, these birds were not on Lord Howe at the time of first settlement. It is not clear if they arrived naturally, or by human introduction in the nineteenth century, or by both means, but they are widespread on other islands in the southwest Pacific and elsewhere.
