for the times they are a-changin'

yesterday, I had a "moment". not a bad moment, but a moment, one that gives you pause.

my daughter's boyfriend came to pick her up in his car. for the first time. 17 and he just got his license, and he came to get her, to take her out for lunch. and I watched him pull into the driveway, and saw her skip out the door, so excited, 16 and as sweet as can be, so ready for this next phase of her life. and I watched from the window, watched as they drove away, and just sort of stood there, long after they'd gone.

and last night at dinner, I watched my three children together. listened to their laughter, saw the smiles, and how they look at each other. how dani and jonah can finish each other's sentences, how sara gets tears in her eyes when she tells a funny story, how they make each other really, really laugh.

and I drank it all in. my eyes went from one face to other, and I drank them all in. and I know how fast time moves, and so I savor those little moments, those moments that make life worthwhile. those moments that actually mean more than most anything.

and after dinner I surprised them with a cake that I baked, frosted to say "happy snow day", complete with a snowman with a top hat. and isn't it wonderful that as big as they get, a chocolate cake can still result in such high excitement.

smiles, laughter, and chocolate, it's all good.
