If you note - the Kangaroo is not facing the coat of arms but looking away from it. Best story for this is..."that the sculptor didn’t get paid for his work and so the kangaroo’s head was put on the wrong way round, looking back towards the Old Treasury Building, to see when the money was coming,”
But the GPO in Canberra and Sydney also have coat of arms the wrong way round.
I like the sculptor story so i will go with that one.
