Tenterfield Railway Station - road entrance 1988

This 1988 photograph shows the street entrance to the Tenterfield Railway Station. The railway station was opened in 1886 as the last major railway station on the NSW Main Northern Line before the Queensland border and the change of gauge station Wallangarra. When the North Coast line was built and completed in 1930, the Northern line except for a brief period during WW2 started losing importance. By 1972 services ceased to Wallangarra and Tenterfield became the terminus station. This situation ceased in 1989, when the NSW Greiner Government took the axe to country railways in NSW and Tenterfield Railway Station was closed. It was later reopened as museum.
