The price of progress

Improvements are underway on the BNSF St. Croix sub in order to handle the marked increase in traffic the line has seen over the past few years. Work has begun on a project that will eliminate the numerous short single track sections and CTC islands on the line that create bottlenecks, as well as upgrading the signalling system.

Among the more visible changes, the route will lose some of its vintage charm as the classic CB&Q era searchlight block signals are replaced by a modern triple lens design. A partially installed set of the new signals is seen at Winona Jct., Wisconsin.
