Melton Mowbray - St Mary's Church - Stained Glass - Tree of Life Window.
“Tree of Life” stained glass window by Derek Hunt.
Detail: Tree with fruit and birds.
St. Mary’s Parish Church, Melton Mowbray.
“Tree of Life” installed on the north elevation of the Nave at St Mary’s Church.
The design celebrates God’s abundant blessings through living a fruitful life in Christ, and is also a celebration of the Heritage of Melton Mowbray.
A variety of fruit can be found on the Tree of Life including pomegranates, grapes, peaches and plums. The pomegranatge represents the resurrection and the hope of eternal life in Christ. Birds nestle in its branches and the wily fox can be seen hiding from the encroaching hunt.
The Borough Council Coat of Arms in the tracery panel is complimented by the Melton Mowbray Town Estate Crest at the heart of the Tree, representing the valuable work of the Town Estate, and St Mary’s Church is established at its roots, providing spiritual nourishment for the community. The first stanza of the hymn “Jerusalem” in reference to Sir Malcolm Sergent and an image of the Butter Cross are represented in the design.
A small picnic basket with stilton cheese and pork pie can be seen in the bottom right. The inscription on the lower left is taken from Proverbs 11 v 30 ‘The fruit of the righteous is a Tree of Life” and the lower right inscription is in memory of the donor of the window.
The window is handmade in Leicestershire with traditional materials, using a clear streaky antique glass background, allowing lots of natural light into the interior.
—————————————————————
In Memory of John Plumb 1939 - 2014.
It was unveiled at a special Service of Praise and Thanksgiving in the church and was dedicated by the Bishop of Leicester, the Rt Revd Martyn Snow, on Wednesday 13 December 2017.
Derek Hunt writes:
In the summer last year (2016) St Mary’s church in Melton Mowbray asked me to make a new stained glass window to celebrate everything about the town, including their world famous Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese! So I put my thinking cap on and developed a design using lots of colour and including details of the town's history, their Coats of Arms, a red Leicestershire Fox and references to Sir Malcolm Sargent and “Painting the Town Red”. Can you see the pork pie?
