Sheffield - Kelham Island and Neepsend
Green Lane Works.
Gateway & Clock Tower, Green Lane, Sheffield, 1860.
For Henry Hoole, firegrate manufacturer.
Grade ll* listed.
Detail: Hephaestus - On the anvil is writen "Henry E Hoole Mayor 1860”.
It is thought that the sculptor Alfred Stevens designed the gatehouse and may have been responsible for the relief sculptured decoration. Stevens had worked for Hoole & Co between 1850 and 1852 as chief designer and had designed much of the firm's award winning work for the 1851 exhibition.
The Gateway is constructed of ashlar, stucco and brick and takes the form of a tripartite triumphal arch with a carving of a female head on the keystone above the main arch. The two outer arches have relief panels of the Greek gods Hephaestus (left) and Athena (right) above them. The name of the works is carved above the central arch and above this is an apex roof which at one time carried a coat of arms which is now missing. The gateway is topped off by a cupola with clock and weather vane.
