Alfred Tory

‘Blessed Virgin’, 1904

Rectory, St Marie’s RC Cathedral

stone

Location:

Rectory, St Marie’s RC Cathedral, Norfolk Street, S1.

Description:

The figure of the Virgin stands in a niche with an ornate canopy, similar to that enclosing the Cairns statue on High Street [133] by Alfred Tory’s father, Frank Tory senior. It is less than lifesize and stands at first floor level.

Commission:

St Marie’s Cathderal

Comment:

Alfred Tory (1881-?) was only in his early twenties when he made this piece. Four small contemporary heads (possibly portraits) decorate the window at the eastern end of the rectory. J.B.Himsworth's manuscript identifies one of these as the work of Alfred Tory.
