where crews fear to tread

The Rockwell is a necessary evil for Chicagoland railroading. Not quite as fancy as the BRC or IHB belt routes it serves roughly the same purpose, move traffic from a western carrier to an eastern one. Its placement on the Chicago street grid tough lines up with some rough and downtrodden areas of the city. I've heard tales of CNW agents being specifically assigned to drive along with every move thru the corridor.

While certain pockets have cleaned their act up, the railroad's historically rough past makes a railfan's presence a cause for suspicion. I shrugged off the comically long blasts of 1988's horn as he turned the corner at Rockwell and aimed myself for home.
