Su denominación científica en griego, significa Cuervo nocturno y hace clara referencia a sus hábitos noctámbulos, se le conoce con diversos nombres, Martinete, Garza bruja, Dormilón, Black-Crowned, Night- Heron…. Al caer la noche, vuelan siguiendo el curso del río en dirección a sus áreas de pesca, ubicadas con frecuencia a varios kilómetros de distancia del dormidero. En la oscuridad, los distintos individuos del grupo se comunican entre sí emitiendo una voz característica: «guac-guac». Este sonoro reclamo también ha inspirado una cantidad considerable de nombres vernáculos, tales como guaco o huaco en Perú, Colombia, Venezuela y Mexico, kwak en neeerlandés, y muchos más.
