Ingoldisthorpe - 2 . . . console.

The console is unusual, in that the stop- knobs are arranged in a single horizontal row, under the music-desk ~ instead of the more usual vertical rows, left & right.

 

This arrangement is known as a "Hollins-Console" . . first made to order, for a blind Scottish organist named Alfred Hollins . . . who said he found this arrangement easier to navigate ~ and for a few years in the early 20th century, the idea caught on !

 

As you can see, the stops become somewhat tightly packed, leaving little room for the fingers to grasp a stop-knob to pull it out.

The remedy was to provide each stop with a capture-piston below it ~

and pushing the piston IN caused the stop to pop-out mechanically !
