A Land of Contradictions (2)

We'll stay in Oman for a few more images. It is a country that few have heard of or thought about exploring. It really is worth doing a trip there. There are sand dunes of, course, where the Bedouins and camels have lived for centuries.

As I have learned in my travels not all deserts are alike. The Namib desert has huge sand dunes, the Sahara desert was quite flat in Tunisia and the Thar desert in India had very small dunes. Wadi Rum in Jordan has mammoth rock formations among the sand. All deserts have an allure for me. They are clean, mesmerizing, still and peaceful. They are as T.E. Lawrence has written: "The desert is an ocean in which no oar is dipped."

The dunes of Wahiba Sands are like rolling hills and since our world now has great vehicles like Land Rovers it is the perfect place for dune bashing. Wahiba Sands is, in general, the very quiet peaceful place it has been for centuries, but also a host to modern exhilarating fun.

Oman's magic is in the fact that they have managed to maintain the charming sights and sounds of past centuries while adding a few creature comforts and entertainment.
