The Spirit of the World ( On and Off)
We Are Warriors
Few African tribes exist today. What a shame in so many ways. Seeing the Maasia in the Northern part of Tanzania and the southern part of Kenya, was joy at first sight for me. The men's bright red flowing robes, shukas, are stunning to say the least. The red, they say, is to ward of lions.
They seem to always be on the move as they were originally semi nomadic people. To drive through the huge vistas that make up northern Tanzania and to suddenly see the brightly colored figures herding their cattle up and down the hills, is to see Africa at its best.
I included a visit to one of their villages on my last trip to Tanzania and even though I knew they put on a tourist show for me, I was thrilled when they showed me who the strongest hunter was. It was the man who could jump the highest.
