WSJ - The New Taiwanese

"This is a beginning for Taiwanese society." Ke Yu-ling (柯宇玲), executive director of the Pearl S. Buck Foundation (賽珍珠基金會), waxed enthusiastic and spoke of the services offered to foreign brides in Taiwan.

 

In December 2009, I worked as a translator/fixer for the Wall Street Journal. While I was not the photojournalist on this project, I was able to snap a few frames.

 

One of the stories that I worked on is about "The New Taiwanese." Taiwan currently has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Women are now more empowered and are finding more appeal in single life. A number of men, primarily middle-aged individuals pressured to have families, go abroad to find wives. More and more children from immigrant families are making up the future population of Taiwan.
