WSJ - The New Taiwanese

A first grade teacher at Shiding Elementary School helps half-Taiwanese Vietnamese Hsu Wen-zhen with her classwork. About fifty percent of Wen-zhen's classmates are from mixed-marriage families.

 

In December 2009, I worked as a translator/fixer for the Wall Street Journal. While I was not the photojournalist on this project, I was able to snap a few frames.

 

One of the stories that I worked on is about "The New Taiwanese." Taiwan currently has one of the lowest birth rates in the world. Women are now more empowered and are finding more appeal in single life. A number of men, primarily middle-aged individuals pressured to have families, go abroad to find wives. More and more children from immigrant families are making up the future population of Taiwan.
