Barris Batmobile 76188 Prototype
Holy LEGO 76188 Batmobile batprototype Batman!
I found this today while sorting my ideas boxes at work. I always build for feel rather than accuracy, and I felt that the ‘66 Batmobile should have a narrow track. For a while I really tried to tuck in the wheels in the wheelarches, but there is no smart way to do it, the only halfway reasonable idea I came up with (well, I tried narrow wheels, but that looked so dumb) was to use these 6 long wheelarches. I really loved the look of it! By moving the wheels inwards, and because these arches seem stretched, the whole car looked longer and felt more correct.
There were two problems though: the wheelarch would have to be decorated to get rid of the “steps” that this element has, and it’s a crappy build.
In fact, the building experience was so terrible, and the front ended up being so fragile during construction, that we decided to drop the idea halfway thru investigating how to print (or whatever, mold in two colors?) that wheelarch.
But I really liked the looks. I liked the looks so much that in the 15 years working as a designer for LEGO, this is the only prototype of anything that I ever kept.
