Spalding No.1

The interior of Spalding No.1 box in 1981, showing the (majority) of the Tyer & Co. Duplex Tappet frame of 80 levers, which must have been one of the largest frames manufactured by this small company. This box opened on 11th September 1921 and as well as controlling the lines exiting at the southern end of Spalding station, also had to supervise the adjacent busy road crossing.

At the far end can be seen one of the two pedestals each with 2 pairs of minature levers which controlled the 8 crossing gates across four lines electrically. The gate wheel was retained to work the gates if any of the electric motors failed.

The frame was shortened to just 40 levers in July 1984 following the closure of Spalding No.2 box.
