Chard Junction Creamery

The Unigate Creamery at Chard Junction seen from a passing Exeter bound train in 1978. There still appears to be a good amount of milk traffic with quite a few tankers present, the rails to the sidings are shiny and the firm's Ruston & Hornsby shunter is in attendance. In the 1920's the premises were Messrs.Salter & Stokes Ltd's butter factory; by 1934 they were part of Wilts United Dairies Ltd as their Yonder Hill Creamery. United Dairies merged with Cow & Gate in 1959 to form Unigate, with the St.Ivel brand of Messrs.Aplin & Barrett from Yeovil added the following year. Rail born milk traffic from Yonder Hill Creamery (then more commonly referred to as Chard Junction Creamery) finished in 1980. As part of Dairy Crest the Creamery was sadly closed in November 2015 and later demolished in 2016.
