Broom Gates 1967

The L&SWR Type 1 ground level box at Broom Gates, seen shortly after closure in 1967. Situated between Chard Junction and Axminster, the box opened c.1875, and contained a Stevens Knee frame of 6 levers. It was down-graded to a gate box only on 11th June 1967, after the Western Region singled this part of the former L&SWR West of England Main Line. The gates were replaced by Automatic Half Barriers in September 1967 and the box closed for good on 20th August 1967. Note the wonderfully ornate roof ventilator, which the LSWR were quite partial to fitting to some of their early Type 1 boxes.
