1908 Memorial
In 1908 a gathering was held at Fort Meigs to honor those who had died in battle there
and a special memorial monument was erected there. It now stands almost in the
middle of the reconstructed Fort.
The large mound of dirt in front of this Memorial is one of several large safety mounds
constructed by the Army to shield the soldiers from cannon fire coming in over the Fort's timbers. By staying behind the dirt wall which was originally several feet high they
could move around the inside of the Fort with less chance of being hit by flying balls
or exploding balls.
