Black or Young Turkey Vultures ?

Two Vultures sitting on the top of an old dead tree near the Rocky Ford Creek in the Van Buren State Park.

August 2010

These appeared at first to me to be Black Vultures; which, are less common then Turkey Vultures and have a more restricted range with Ohio near the upper limits. These are the only Black Vultures I have ever identified, and I have lived in Ohio all my life.

The Black Vulture has a black head while the Turkey Vulture has a red head; however, young

Turkey Vultures have black heads until they turn red. Both look black from a distance; however,

up close the Turkey Vulture appears more brown to me.
