St Peter's Firsts vs Plumpton & East Chiltington - 25 July 2015

St. Peter's won the toss and inserted Plumpton on a very slow pitch. Plumpton's openers started solidly, before Alex Coomber struck twice in consecutive overs whilst the score was on 56. Plumpton rebuilt their innings steadily before beginning to increase the scoring rate and the third wicket pair put on 138 before Stuart Fuller fell to Ben Powis for 90. Powis took his second wicket during his next over, with the score on 207, and Plumpton finished their allotted 50 overs on 218 for 4. Opener Dan Saunders was left on 90 not out.

With 43 overs, a target of 219 to win on such a slow pitch looked daunting, but St. Peter's resolved to go for it. Despite a disastrous start that saw them slump to 13 for 3 after 9 overs, St. Peter's were still not prepared to settle for a draw and continued to attack the bowling as far as conditions allowed. Sam Wheatley and captain Duncan Andrews put on 92 for the fourth wicket before Wheatley fell for 33 and a mini collapse saw the score reduced to 107 for 5. Still attacking, the score was taken to 152 before the sixth wicket fell.

When Andrews fell for an impressive 80, the game looked up, but the tail continued to hit out and St. Peter's were bowled out for 193. Pick of the bowlers was Chris Batchelor who took 6 for 54.

This was a game that, had St. Peter's wanted to play safe, could easily have been saved, but their competitive sprit led to a far more positive approach and a very watchable match. This was their first defeat of the season, but they remain jointly top of the table with Seaford, who won their match against Ringmer.
