Science comes to Life
Science lessons can be challenging in a resource-poor school, as experiments and processes are often limited to theoretical explanations by the teacher - not a lot of "learning by doing," despite Dewey's advice. So, in past human reproduction lessons in this 7th grade class, teachers had to content themselves to drawing figures on the board, and explaining steps of biological processes by listing them next to these chalky sketches. For this IWB-integrated lesson in Soum (Fatick), Mr Sagne shows a diagram of fertilization to his students, and then amazes his students by, with one click, starting to play a film that simulates the process, complete with audio commentary! At the students' request, he plays the simulation three times, as they watch and take notes.
