old school

Rosie is old enough now to understand and has some curiosity about what a camera is actually doing and how. I have found a good start is a medium format film camera. It actually a perfect teaching tool for a child. When I take it apart she is able to see that it's basically a hollow cube with a hole in the front that allows light to pass through and expose an emulsion covered film. Everything about it is big and sturdy, the film advance lever, the shutter release, the viewer so it's just right for a child to touch and explore it's mechanics without fear of breaking it. I saved some frames for her after shooting with the camera yesterday which gave her 5 shots. I think giving only 5 shots made her see how precious each shot is and it was interesting to see how much care she took in deciding how to use her limited number of film frames.
