An unbelievable yet true tale - We were sitting watching TV a couple nights ago and my hubby jumped up and claimed he saw a mouse. I had left the sliders open absentmindedly that day and he must have wandered in. Hubby started banging around in the kitchen and it came scampering out. The little creature saw me and went scampering back into the kitchen and under the oven. Hubby pulled out the oven but mouse had gone under cabinets. My daughter forbid him to get a mouse trap so while hubby went to bed and said good luck, she and I sat watch over a rigged up shoe box propped up on a wooden dowel which was tied to a string. We perched on the counter top and after about an hour the mouse was lured under the shoe box with some cereal (Cheerios) A tug of the string and the box dropped over him. The contraption actually worked! Here comes a flaw in our plan. How to get the boxed mouse out of the house. Hubby woke up and had a clever idea to slide a piece of cardboard under the shoebox. When he lifted the covered box the more clever mouse saw a sliver of light and burst out of the makeshift trap in an explosion of mousely speed. Back he went under the cabinet. By then it was three in the morning and we had to go to bed.

The next day we purchased a humane trap, which is basically a little house with a door that closes after he enters. The mouse was too clever and decided not to go in the little house even though it was filled with peanut butter and crackers. He must have remembered what happened the last time he went into a box. Finally that night, (last night) after all had gone to bed except me. I saw the mouse run for the sliding glass door hopping frantically along the bottom to find the way out. I crept up while he was thus occupied and standing on tip toes leaned over him and flipped the lock up. I was just about to slide the door open when my two dogs, hearing lock click open, came barreling through the house thinking to go outside. The mouse ran back under the cabinet. After the dogs were locked in a back bedroom I sat up and waited. It was now 2 am but I could not go to sleep knowing the mouse was trying so desperately to get home. About 2:30 am he made dash for the front door. I went to open the door and seeing me, he hopped into my husband's shoe. I quickly opened the door and picked up the shoe and put it outside. He didn't come out so I gave the shoe a shove, but nothing...I picked up the wrong shoe! As I picked up the other shoe, mouse jumped out and scampered over my feet and under the couch. No matter how prepared you are, you cannot help but shriek when a wild mouse scampers over your feet. Hubby hearing my shriek came out of the bedroom and after filling him in on the excitement, he lifted up the end of the couch where the mouse was still hiding and I herded the terrified little creature toward the open doorway to freedom.
