In these photos, you can see the two things that were done differently than the original specs: 1) The weights were shown hanging straight down; knowing that most museums don't like holes in their floors, they added some pulleys so the weights go no lower than the floor. 2) Turning all those gears requires a lot of effort, so the geared handle was added to make it humanly possible to do it. The caretakers posit that Babbage himself probably would have added this himself if he had actually built the machine.
