Reflections on Rolling Art

1939 Bugatti Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet by Gangloff in a not uncommon color combo. This is one of the unusual drop-top Type 57s.

The Stelvio coachwork on this Bugatti is by Gangloff in Colmar. Few Stelvios were made, and no two were identical. A total of 96 57Cs were built. It is a documented supercharged Type 57.

This chassis was completed in January 1939 before being sent to Carrosserie Gangloff. The 4-seater Stelvio cabriolet was personally delivered by Jean Bugatti to its new owner, M. Guyard, a close friend of Ettore Bugatti. In May 1940, after the fall of France, in order to avoid losing the car to occupying troops, the Type 57 was hidden away on a farm in the Auvergne region of central France, where it survived in good order. In the late 1940s, the car was shown at the Casino d'Evian-les-Bains Concours d'Elegance before M. Guyard sold it for the price of a new Renault 4 CV. Later the car was exported to the United States, where it spent the next 50 years in various collections, including the Harrah Automobile Collection in 1960 where it spent the next 25 years.
